Why Short-Form Video Should Be Your Next Marketing Investment.
If you’ve been telling yourself you’ll “get to video eventually,” the data says eventually arrived a while ago. Video isn’t an emerging channel anymore. It’s the baseline.
According to Wyzowl’s 2026 State of Video Marketing report (now in its 12th consecutive year of survey data), 91% of businesses use video as a marketing tool, and 93% of video marketers consider it an important part of their overall strategy.
But within the broader world of video, one format is doing the heavy lifting: short-form, social-first video. Here’s what the numbers actually say, and why we’ve made it the centerpiece of what we’re offering clients this quarter.
01The format that delivers the best return
This isn’t a hunch. In HubSpot’s State of Marketing 2026 report, marketers ranked short-form video as the #1 ROI-generating content format, the top spot among all content types surveyed. Wyzowl’s 2026 data backs this up from a different angle: 93% of marketers report positive ROI from video marketing, with 83% saying video has directly increased sales, 85% saying it has helped generate leads, and 82% crediting it with increased web traffic.
Engagement data tells the same story. Short-form videos generate roughly 2.5x more engagement than long-form video content, and short-form video ads have been shown to deliver about 1.6x higher ROI than static ads.
02Your customers are asking for this
It’s not just marketers who prefer the format. It’s the people you’re trying to reach.
When Wyzowl asked consumers how they’d most like to learn about a new product or service, 63% said a short video. Compare that to just 12% who preferred a text-based article and 7% who wanted an infographic. Meanwhile, 84% of consumers say they want to see more video from brands, a number that has held remarkably steady for nearly a decade of Wyzowl’s surveys.
And the payoff at the bottom of the funnel is real: 82% of people say they’ve been convinced to buy a product or service after watching a video (Wyzowl, 2026).
of consumers say video quality impacts their trust in a brand (Wyzowl, 2026). Quality isn’t cosmetic. It’s a trust and conversion input.
Audiences watch so much video now that they can instantly tell the difference between something thrown together and something made with care.
03Small businesses are winning here, not just big brands
There’s a common assumption that polished video content is the territory of big budgets. The data suggests the opposite. Reporting from Marketing Interactive found that 70% of small businesses have adopted short-form video as a core marketing strategy, compared to just 8% of large enterprises. Smaller, nimbler teams are actually better positioned to publish consistently and speak authentically, which is exactly what these platforms reward.
Consistency matters, too: brands that post video content at least twice per week have seen engagement rates roughly 41% higher than those that post less often.
04Where and how long?
Platform data from Wyzowl’s 2026 report shows YouTube remains the most-used video platform among businesses at 82%, followed by LinkedIn at 70%, Instagram at 69%, and Facebook at 66%. For B2B brands in particular, LinkedIn is a standout: short-form video there earns about 3x the engagement of text posts.
On length and format, the data points the same direction:
- 71% of marketers believe videos between 30 seconds and 2 minutes are the most effective (Wyzowl, 2026)
- 30 to 60 seconds is cited most often as the single best-performing range
- An estimated 81% of short-form viewing now happens in 9:16 vertical format
05What this means for your business
The takeaway isn’t “post more videos.” It’s that short-form, social-first video has become the most efficient way to earn attention, build trust, and drive measurable results, and that doing it well requires strategy, consistency, and production quality that reflects your brand.
There’s a second payoff, too. Consistent, well-structured video content across your platforms reinforces brand credibility and tells AI systems your business is active and worth recommending. The Reels you post this quarter are also working for you in Google, AI Overviews, and the answer engines your customers ask. That’s the same principle behind our GEO and AEO work: showing up where people are actually looking.
That’s where we come in. This quarter, 77 Design Co. is making short-form, social-first video the core of our client offering: platform-specific strategy, on-brand creative, and a consistent publishing cadence built around the formats and lengths the data says actually perform. We’ve been designing for attention since the early 2000s, and attention lives in short-form video right now.
